From Wildlife to Whiskers: Why I’m Now Painting Pet Portraits

For as long as I can remember, I’ve been drawn to capturing the beauty of nature - I have great memories of setting myself up in the garden to paint as a child, with one of my first 'proper' paintings being bright red roses on a great big canvas for my Grandma. British flora and fauna have always been at the heart of my work, and my love for the natural world has deeply influenced my artistic journey. But recently, I’ve found myself inspired by a different kind of subject: our beloved pets.

The transition to painting pet portraits felt completely natural. Just as I find joy in capturing the essence of wildlife, I’ve discovered the same passion for painting our loyal companions, especially all those funny expressions and characteristics that make them so special to us. Animals, whether wild or domestic, each have their own distinct personalities and stories to tell - and I love the challenge of bringing them to life through watercolour or oil.

Why Paint Pet Portraits?

Pets are more than just animals; they are family. They bring comfort, companionship, and unconditional love, and their presence in our lives leaves an unforgettable mark. My goal with each portrait is to create a timeless piece of art that not only captures their physical features but also their spirit and personality. Whether it’s the playful energy of a young pup, the wise gaze of an old cat, or the gentle nature of a beloved rabbit, I aim to preserve these precious memories in a way that feels both personal and artistic.

Bringing Nature into Every Portrait

While pet portraits are a new extension of my work, they still align with my love for nature. I often incorporate subtle elements of British flora - such as the soft natural tones that reflect the changing seasons. Just as my paintings of wildlife are a tribute to the beauty of the natural world, my pet portraits celebrate the deep connection we share with animals, both wild and domestic.

How to Commission a Pet Portrait

If you’d like to immortalize your furry (or feathered!) friend in a unique and meaningful way, I’d love to create a custom piece for you. My process is simple: you provide a few high-quality photos of your pet, share any special details you'd like included, and I’ll work closely with you to ensure the final piece truly reflects their character.

As I continue to explore this new creative path, I’m excited to merge my passion for wildlife art with the warmth and personality of pet portraits. Whether it’s a majestic fox, a treasured dog, or a beloved cat, I believe every creature deserves to be celebrated in art.
